Overwhelming majority of violent criminals are Democrats, claims Sen. Ted Cruz

According to GOP presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), “the simple and undeniable fact is the overwhelming majority of violent criminals are Democrats.”

In an interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, Cruz discussed the shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, which left three people dead.[1]

As stated in Politico, the suspect’s reported mention of “baby parts” at the time of the shooting has linked the incident to the nation’s heated abortion debate. It also led some people to blame the incident on the ugly rhetoric surrounding Planned Parenthood.[2]

“This whole episode has really displayed the ugly underbelly of media,” said Cruz. “Every time you have some sort of violent crime or mass killing, you can almost see the media salivating. Hoping, hoping desperately that the murderer happens to be a Republican so they can use it to try to paint their political enemies.”

“There’s a reason why the Democrats for years have been viewed as soft on crime,” Cruz continued. “The Democrats know convicted felons tend to vote Democrat.”

When asked for evidence, the senator’s group cited a 2014 paper,[PDF] which presented data on party affiliation of ex-felons in three states. In an article published in The Washington Post, however, the paper’s researchers themselves pointed out the error in Cruz’s claim, saying not all ex-felons are necessarily violent criminals.[3]
